Summary

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L。 Armentrout comes book two in her Flesh and Fire series…

The only one who can save Sera now is the one she spent her life planning to kill。

The truth about Sera’s plan is out, shattering the fragile trust forged between her and Nyktos。 Surrounded by those distrustful of her, all Sera has is her duty。 She will do anything to end Kolis, the false King of Gods, and his tyrannical rule of Iliseeum, thus stopping the threat he poses to the mortal realm。

Nyktos has a plan, though, and as they work together, the last thing they need is the undeniable, scorching passion that continues to ignite between them。 Sera cannot afford to fall for the tortured Primal, not when a life no longer bound to a destiny she never wanted is more attainable than ever。 But memories of their shared pleasure and unrivaled desire are a siren’s call impossible to resist。

And as Sera begins to realize that she wants to be more than a Consort in name only, the danger surrounding them intensifies。 The attacks on the Shadowlands are increasing, and when Kolis summons them to Court, a whole new risk becomes apparent。 The Primal power of Life is growing inside her, pushing her closer to the end of her Culling。 And without Nyktos’s love—an emotion he’s incapable of feeling—she won’t survive her Ascension。 That is if she even makes it to her Ascension and Kolis doesn’t get to her first。 Because time is running out。 For both her and the realms。

Knowing that this is very much a prequel series & that a lot of lore dumping for the FBAA series is bound to happen I did struggle with this book more than I did the first one in the series。 It wasn't a bad book by any means, but it did feel like it could have had a bit less lore for FBAA and focused on its own storyline - however, I realize that is impossible to do as they are both so very linked。The story was intriguing & had its own moments that keep it a separate story from FBAA。 There were Knowing that this is very much a prequel series & that a lot of lore dumping for the FBAA series is bound to happen I did struggle with this book more than I did the first one in the series。 It wasn't a bad book by any means, but it did feel like it could have had a bit less lore for FBAA and focused on its own storyline - however, I realize that is impossible to do as they are both so very linked。The story was intriguing & had its own moments that keep it a separate story from FBAA。 There were moments when I was yelling at the FMC for being an idiot, but I believe that is just a part of the story [in a good way]。 。。。more

Hooked on this series - the plot far more engaging than the last few FBAA books。 This story was left on such a cliffhanger! I now love Ash and Sera just as much (maybe more?) than Poppy and Casteel。 Often I’m not interested in lots of extra characters, but really loved every person introduced to the plot。 Even if you’ve given up with FBAA, I would really recommend reading this spinoff series to bring you back in。 However, as usual, there is a LOT of repetition, especially regarding ‘the embers’。 Hooked on this series - the plot far more engaging than the last few FBAA books。 This story was left on such a cliffhanger! Difficult to hold and completely disproportionate to the rest of series。 。。。more

I loveeee this sequel。 Seeing characters from the Blood and Ash series would get me so excited, like seeing an old friend。 This book definitely showed a side of anxiety and depression that I have not seen in other books- It really helped connect to Sera。 This book also helped me understand a lot of Blood & Ash that I didnt understand。 The whole "prophecy" stuff was (and still is) confusing。 But things are beginning to clear up。 The ending basically ripped my heart out。 All that death and then FI I loveeee this sequel。 Seeing characters from the Blood and Ash series would get me so excited, like seeing an old friend。 This book definitely showed a side of anxiety and depression that I have not seen in other books- It really helped connect to Sera。 This book also helped me understand a lot of Blood & Ash that I didnt understand。 The whole "prophecy" stuff was (and still is) confusing。 But things are beginning to clear up。 The ending basically ripped my heart out。 All that death and then FINALLY Kolis knows the truth about Sera。 And of course Nyktos sweeps in at the last second。 Gosh, I cannot wait for the next installment to come out to see how that scene plays out。 。。。more

3 ⭐️Not entirely sure how I feel about this book, neither loved it or hated it, but probably my least favourite book from this world。 I found the pacing to be slow in places and other bits unnecessarily dragged out。 I will say that I will hand on heart will always fall into the emotive writing when its comes to Sera’s mental health, it gets me every time。 I do like trying to link all the bits in the massive FBAA web but I did find myself ridiculously confused in other places。 I also don’t feel I 3 ⭐️Not entirely sure how I feel about this book, neither loved it or hated it, but probably my least favourite book from this world。 I found the pacing to be slow in places and other bits unnecessarily dragged out。 I will say that I will hand on heart will always fall into the emotive writing when its comes to Sera’s mental health, it gets me every time。 I do like trying to link all the bits in the massive FBAA web but I did find myself ridiculously confused in other places。 I also don’t feel I love the side characters as much in this series (Draken excluded cos who wouldn’t love Jadis), and I think thats one of the reasons I love FBAA so much。 Interested to see what Kolis will do with this latest development though。TWs: depictions of gore, violence, corpse depictions, ref to SA, panic attacks, anxiety and depression 。。。more

DNF- 50%。 About to tap out of entire book club because I simply cannot suffer through these books any longer。 Characters: I loved Sera because she was a strong character in a lot of the ways Poppy isn't (which frustrated me with the FBAA books)。 But I don't know where that person is in this series。 I'm so embarrassed for her。 She is becoming insufferable and that feels like such a betrayal to the independent and fierce woman we got to know。Plot: Doesn't exist。 I'm still looking for it。 I'm actua DNF- 50%。 About to tap out of entire book club because I simply cannot suffer through these books any longer。 Characters: I loved Sera because she was a strong character in a lot of the ways Poppy isn't (which frustrated me with the FBAA books)。 But I don't know where that person is in this series。 I'm so embarrassed for her。 She is becoming insufferable and that feels like such a betrayal to the independent and fierce woman we got to know。Plot: Doesn't exist。 I'm still looking for it。 I'm actually begging to find it! I took a bit of a break in the middle of this book so I don’t remember the beginning well and it’s been a while since I read the first book in this series but this book did not disappoint。 It was just as hot as I expected and I finally feel like there’s some new material in terms of plot points and details which I enjoyed。 Normally I find her books to be a plot dump at the end but I would say the majority for his book has really good pacing。 I definitely like this prequel series better than the I took a bit of a break in the middle of this book so I don’t remember the beginning well and it’s been a while since I read the first book in this series but this book did not disappoint。 It was just as hot as I expected and I finally feel like there’s some new material in terms of plot points and details which I enjoyed。 Normally I find her books to be a plot dump at the end but I would say the majority for his book has really good pacing。 I definitely like this prequel series better than the other one。 Can’t wait for more。 。。。more

Ok— did I /technically/ finish it? No。 But I did read 550 pages of a 700 page book that I KNOW I am going to have to reread when the next one comes out, and I barely enjoyed it enough for the first read let alone a reread。 So I did myself a favor and called it quits a little early。 I will finish it eventually, promise!

Devoured it and read it in a day。 Liked the story, but didn’t like the bit about Nyktos and Veses - knew there’d be more to it。 Will be interesting to see whether it goes nextSecond read: enjoyed it so much, I’m reading it again already!

Wow。 I think this book just became my absolute favourite of the entire series。 Didn’t think anyone could top Casteel but… I was in an emotional stranglehold the whole way through。 I sustained considerable emotional damage and can’t wait for the next one。。 :)

We left off with the biggest plot-twist, but also so much information。 I thought there wouldn't be anymore surprises, but Jennifer came in clutch and brought forward more theories and concepts and just expectations。 I loved that Nyktos still cared about her。 That he would do anything to protect her。 I loved that Sera wanted to sacrifice herself for the others that felt betrayed by her。 They really are meant to be。 We left off with the biggest plot-twist, but also so much information。 I thought there wouldn't be anymore surprises, but Jennifer came in clutch and brought forward more theories and concepts and just expectations。 I loved that Nyktos still cared about her。 That he would do anything to protect her。 I loved that Sera wanted to sacrifice herself for the others that felt betrayed by her。 They really are meant to be。 。。。more

Great plot twists and romantic tension between characters。 The amount of insecurity and idiot male adoration was much more manageable compared to other of Jennifer Armentrout’s books。 Overall good book!
